January 23, 2012

Hi

OOOOOKKKKKK so this week was pretty uneventful as well. I had pday on monday, the counsel of the ZLs on Tuesday, had a doctors appointment on wednesday in Floripa, bought Dad his present and sent it off. On Thursday I worked in my area for 2 hours before having to go to Balneário Camboriú to do a baptismal interview, which takes all day cuz its far away. Friday had ANOTHER interview even farther away in Balneário Camboriú again. Saturday we worked all day, and just did contacts. Sunday, we FINALLY got a couple lessons. We taught this family that I have been teaching for a while, the wife and kid want to get baptized so bad but the Dad still isn´t sure. Pray for Sergio to receive an answer. But we taught them the 3rd lesson, which is the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a good spiritual lesson, and when we explained that the Spirit testifies using feelings of peace of mind, she said ``hey, we were talkin yesterday about how much more at peace we feel when you visit us! And when you leave, it just goes away!!`` She was under the impression that it was us that brought the feelings (we are pretty fun to be around, I´ll admit) but we explained that it was the spirit telling her that the messages that we share are true. I think they´ll be baptized here pretty soon.

I know kinda how Dad feels cuz I will be traveling a TON this month. I have an interview in Balneário next week, the day after that I will have to go to Blumenau (a cool German city) to do an interview, then the next week I will have to go to Florianópolis then back to blumenau. So, I am kinda actually glad cuz it was SOOOOO hot this week. I cannot sleep. Last night I just walked around until 3 until I was exhausted enough to disregard the heat. Why would anyone ever live in this heat without an air conditioner!??

Today I went to Balneário again. Its so cool there I just can´t resist visiting. We found yet another view point to climb up today. It was really cool, much more organized than the one I went to last week. Transfers are this week. President told me I will stay only one more, so I basically know that I will be transferred here in 6 weeks! But for now, I love this area, its good. I will stay with Elder Barros. He is a good guy, we get along great. But transfers are always stressful cuz I gotta organize all that junk at the bus station so no one is ever alone and all that Jazz. SPEAKING of Jazz, I saw the roster the other day and I hardly recognize the team anymore! Its weird. I also saw the Lakers (the score) get creamed by Orlando and mom´s favorite player, Dwight Howard.

IT SNOWED finally!! Lucky! Oh yea, I got Katie´s package FINALLY and I showed the ski movie to president and said ``you can´t watch it, but can I?`` so he is gonna watch it I guess. haha. But thanks Kate, I loved the pictures!!

I hope you like the pictures I send, They are all in my area except the one near the beach. Thats in Balneário Camboriú. that catholic church looks like ``its a small world`` in Disneyland! HAHAHA

Thats all I have got for this week. Sorry I didn´t write in my journal one time this week, it was a ``corrida`` (a race)

I love you all!!

Helloooooo

Hey, so I went to Balneário again today. I saw something that I promised to myself I will someday do. We went on this little tiny hike thing and it goes all the way up to this super steep mountain and at the top it is just a grass hill. Its called ``bald guy hill`` in portuguese. Then, we heard this weird sound. I looked over, and there was a guy with a little mini parachute and a big fan strapped to his back just flying around the jungle and beaches. It was SOO FUN LOOKING. Go to ``voador.com`` I think thats the website. but today was really fun. We just went and saw the sites. There is a big jesus statue in Balneário like the one in Rio de Janeiro that is holding a big light that shines on the main avenue at night. It was pretty cool. My battery ran out or else I´d send you pics.

Me and my comp get along great! I forgot that I had met him 8 months ago while I was in tijucas. He is really funny and talkative, with is generally a big plus for a missionary. He is from the interior of São Paulo, where generally everyone considers them to be hicks. Its like the south of the U.S. He has a really goofy accent and everyone loves him cuz he is outgoing. But he is a good missonary as well. And he actually speaks english quite well. The first presidency has commanded that every non american missionary leave the mission fluent in english.. So he has been studyin! This week went really fast though, I didn´t get a chance to write everything down, so I will try my best. It actually was a week full of contacts and dropped apointments, but we got the work done. Lots of contacts.

I have been sick all week cuz I drank some really sketchy water from this shack/house on last tuesday. But I think it has passed. But it was worth it, I was really thirsty.

We are still working with a family I found by clapping doors 7 weeks ago. They read the bom every night and last night we watched CHARLY. I think I have told you about it before, but it is soo good for investigators. And it is authorized by the president. I HIGHLY reccomend that you watch it for family home evening or somethin. My comp cried a ton. I manage not to cry, but it is a tear jerker. Its well made as well. But the family (of 3) really liked it and they just need to mark a date now. Hopefully it will go down smooth. WE meet with them this wednesday.

It seems like Kevin is doing really well, as well as the rest of my friends. I dunno if you ever hear anything about them? But thats crazy that Huntsman dropped out! Why??? There was a HUGE 4 page article in Brazil´s version of ``Life Magazine`` where they interviewed Mitt and Neil A. Anderson. I didn´t know that Neil speaks Poruguese!! But it was a huge article on the beliefs of the church and the interview with Neil Anderson was so cool. He handled the most tough questions with perfect answers. It was great. I will show it to you in 8 months hahah.

Well, unfortunately, nothing too cool happened this week. I just got more sunburned and I look like I am 50. Everyone says ``woa, is that your dad?? He looks 30!!`` then they say ``I want to see YOU look this young when you are 52`` So I look like I am old. I am tired so I always have wrinkly black bags under my eyes. It sucks. But did Dad go skiing yet??????

Thats al I have got. Sorry. I got my hair cut!!! Thats cool right??

Tchau.

Hi

My comp is going to be emergency transferred tomorrow cuz the ZLs need to be together now.. So my comp will be a guy named Elder Barros. I don´t know him yet. But this last week was hot! Not too hot to sleep though, so thats good.

The english class is improving. On Tuesday we had 5 people. I like to teach english, I think it is a good time. But that same day we did 17 contacts and 15 said no. IT was a tough day. But, did grandpa get his letter?: I wrote it and sent it off last pday, so it should be there by now. I am glad there is snow now, I was gonna ask. At least I don´t have to be there to be mad about it!!

Did you know Florianópolis is one of the fashion capitals of the world?? This mission is so funny. There are some places where it is a world class resort, like a city called jurerê on the island, where Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise have houses. But, my area, is dirt poor. It has it all in one shot!! They even have a burger king in Floripa, the ONLY place in all of brazil where you can get a free refill. haha

Thursday the english class was great. We gave out a book of mormon cuz at the end everyone just wanted to know why we were there voluntarily. We explained and had one couple a\sk for a visit. But I went to the HOOD on Thursday. It was fun. The people are so funny! Lots of druggies and drunks, but lots of people who know how to love life with what they have. I thought that the people there were more happy that the people I have seen that are better off. But we spoke english in the streets and people followed us around. It was all little black kids, I felt like I was in Africa. hahaa

Friday was SUCh a rushed day. We woke up, did all the normal crap, and ate lunch. Then we went to Balneário to do a baptismal interview. But it was SOO far away!! Then, a 70´s wife gave us a ride like an hour away to the other side of our area (in the hood) for an appointment. The appointment was alright. The walk was an hour and a half to get home.

I had a dream that I took over overstock.com. It was cool. HAhaha, that would be great.

Saturday we went to a very distant little city called Itaipava. It was in the middle of the jungle. IT was so cool! I took pictures, but forgot my camera, soo mext week I will send them. But, we went to the appointment that we marked during english class. The guy was extremely poor, but extremely smart, and knew lots of things about religion. But it was cool because both he and his wife were humble enough to listen and talk. I think they will be baptized. His named is Geronimo!! hah. He lives so far away though. The spirit was really strong in the lesson, and he said, ``that just makes sense.`` when we were done.

Sunday, I saw NBA highlights and it made me crazy cuz I miss basketball really bad and didn't realize it.

Thats all I have for this week, love you all!!

I sent grandpa a happy birthday card, I hope he gets it!! You never know. I sent it super quick by airplane so it could get to him as fast as possible. He can get a season pass for 20 bucks at Alta now that he is going to be 80!!

I forgot to tell you about the letter that emily wrote me for Christmas. It meant a lot to me. But, I gotta tell you that you have to start applying for your passports and all that visa stuff now!! Its gonna be hard to get into Brazil!!

My fridge is seriously full to the brim with candy. Its ridiculous. We bring it to our investigators and they think its all bizarre. We have got swedish fish, reeses, red vine, and m and ms. They love it though and it is great to make them more comfortable with us. But we found a cool family of 5 that we are teaching right now, but they go to another church and the pastor of the church lives right above their house. When we were doing the contact he looked out the window and looked furious..

The english class is getting a little bit better. There are about 3-4 people that go now, and we have already given one a book of mormon. He is really interested. On Tuesday, we had a really important visit scheduled, but it fell through. I was extremely disappointed but I decided to visit another person. I think God had a hand in that, because the 2 people I visited I had been visiting for 9 weeks and they told me they were ready for baptism!! So, on the 31st, we baptized the 2 of them!! It was really cool. We helped reactivate the dad, who was baptized in the 70s. He was the one that baptized them. But, on the day of the baptism, EVEYRTHING went wrong. I was raining really hard, right when I needed the cell phone the most I lost it, the water wasn´t working in the baptismal font, and we were the only people there at the scheduled time. But, in the end, it all went down smoothly and it was a spiritual experience. It was sooooooo stressful though!! hahah.

So I slept for 6 hours today. I have been exhausted. We have been needing more investigators lately, so I have been going out at 10 and doing contacts for 2 hours before lunch. But, I slept really well one, because the weather has been in the low 70s, and two, I fixed the fan that exploded!! Whenever someone´s fan breaks, they just throw it on the side of the road. So, piece by piece, I got the right pieces and put it all together on our broken exploded fan, and now it works even better! But, my comp sleeps with it now, I still am afraid of it exploding.

So holidays are terrible for working in Brazil. Everyone says they are the best on the mission for working, but in Brazil no one even answers their doors. We just did contacts all day on Christmas Eve and New Years day. But thats OK.

I am fascinated about geneology. I have always had a little bit of interest, but the mission has made me want to know more!! I loved the email dad sent me about the journal and letters he found at grandpas house where he was born on the table or whatever in Spring City. I tell everyone that my great greats served missions!

This week I realized that the black little plack that misisonaries wear must have been revelation, because it grabs EVERY single persons attention. And the majority of them look at mine, then look at my comps, and ask, ``are you both named Elder??`` And we have an easy contact. Its really funny. We taught a family of 8 that lives in a house smaller than the TV room in our house and it is gonna fall over any second.

I watched ``The Gridiron Gang`` and Megamind`` Gridiron gang was really cheesy and it swore a lot. I thought it was funny that president let us watch it. Megamind was really funny. at 12 midnight it was like armaggedon in Itajaí. EVERYONE bought cheap little bombs to set off, and right at midnight until 2 the bombs didn´t stop. I took a video I will show you later.

But I gotta go!! I love you all!!

It was really good to talk to you all, except I was worried about the time. But, its OK-it was worth it. I feel like I didn´t talk to anyone individually and kind of wanted to but it was too hard with millions of you. I hope you all enjoyed it like I did though!! I thought Emily looked a lot older!.

I wanted to hear Oliver talk more, he squeaked one time and it was so raspy!! And Charlotte was so cute!! I will never forget her waving and smiling in the camera. hahaah she is so funny. But Oliver seriously has a big huge head. Hopefully he grows into it. But when will Katie figure out if its a boy or girl?? Thats such good news!! That will be fun to have the two so close together in age. Like me and Katie but even closer!!

So I thought that all those pills you sent me were actually the Cracklin´Oat Bran (which is my favorite cereal) and I was suprised to find pills inside! So are those just daily nutrients?? I still have the ones from Costco. A lot. Cuz I left them in Imbituba forever and just got them back last week.

I was really disappointed in THOR. I can´t get over it. I thought it was mental. But Linds and Kate, thanks so much for the pics! They are so funny! The pic of Oliver crying with his bomb costume is hilarious. And thanks for the cuff links! Everyone is gonna think I am rich now. Actually everyone already thinks I am cuz a member who works with clothing saw that I have a huge boss suit, which is triple the price here. Hahaha its funny. But why did the stock fall!!?? Hahahaha I thought it was kinda funny. It´ll be just like Seinfeld though, don´t Sell!!

I am working with a family of 3 still that are progressing and wanting to get baptized. Unfortunately, they have family that hates us and talks crap about the church all the time. I think they will make the right decision though. I really wanted the baptism on Cmas but it didn´t work out.

That´s about it!! I told you it all yesterday!! And I made up my mind. You can come to get me, I don´t care if I have to stay in missionary clothes or not. Just come!! but TRY and work it out so I get released over the phone!!

Everyone,

I have yet to go to Floripa so I am sure all the packages are there waiting.

This was another hard week cuz I was in a trio all week because of some emergency transfers that I had to deal with.. So I was calling people and running back and forth from apartments and the bus station all week it was terrible. And it is so humid now cuz right after it rains it is just an oven. But, the 2 guys that were living at my house left, so we were able to clean the house a little bit. I love to use bleach, it cleans everything and kills everything too.

Unfotunately Elder Neilson got transferred from my zone. But its OK. I also talked to Elder Bell, that one kid from our stake. He is a good guy and seems happy and optimistic. On Tuesday we finally got a big old banner advertising the english class made and put it up at the chapel. We had 2 people at the last class, so at least it is improving!! I get at least 5 calls a day about it, I dunno why no one shows up!!

I have decided that Christmas is terrible without snow, and its even worse when it is humid. But thats OK, its my last Christmas EVER away from home!! In the morning it is only hot, compared to the afternoon when its burning hot, so we run everyday. Its really hard to breath but I like it, I stay awake more durning the day. But The other day I bought mouthwash but I bought the wrong flavor so it mad me sad. On Thursday we marked 2 baptisms for New years eve!! That´ll be pretty cool. I am also working with a family of 3 that I want to mark their baptisms on Christmas Day. I think it would be one of the most memorable Christmases ever. But we´ll see. I would baptize them right before I talk to you!! SPEAKING of which, we are able to use SKYPE. But only for 40 minutes, even if we used the phone. So that sucks. But I think on Saturday I will email you to tell you the user name I will use and the time that we will do it... I was thinking like 4 in the afternoon my time.. Let me know if that works.

I went to Balneário again this week to do a baptismal interview. I really like it there. But, as for getting picked up from my mission, if you still want to do it, I am in. But I would have to stay in missionary clothes and stuff, so thats kind of lame. Maybe we could just come back in like February or somethin I dunno.. Just keep thinkin about it. I WANT so bad to get set apart on the phone so I can just be in normal clothes!!

The church here (brazil) is not nearly as well organized as it is in the U.S. And even in the U.S., at least in Louisiana, its not like Utah. Its just not as punctual I guess. But Saturday night we had a big old Christmas dinner, it was pretty good. We had 10 investigators at church!! We´ll see how it goes with all of them. Its a lot of people to try to keep tracfk of!! Speaking of keeping track of things, I am going to have to somehow organize it so that 12 missionaries can sleep at my house, because the bus that we need to get on to go to floripa for the Christmas Conference of the mission is gonna pass only through my area, and at 5 in the morning. That will happen of Thrusday morning. So that will be crazy.

One night this last week I almost died of a heart attack. (I don´t know if that is true or not) But I was sleeping, exhausted from a long long day, and the fan that we have is way old and shaky, and it was on full blast. Out of nowhere it exploded huge and pieces of metal and plastic went flying everwhere. I somehow had the world´s fastest reflexes and woke up out of a deep sleep and had enough time to cover my face so that it didn´t get riddled with metal and plastic. Then it fell on the ground and mini exploded again, it was the loudest thing I have ever heard. But it happened at 4 in the morning and the crazy thing is, my companion did not wake up!! Pieces hit him and he still did not wake up!! I had people BELOW my apartment complain about noise at 3 in the morning, but somehow my companion slept through it. It scared me so bad though I couldn´t go back to sleep for the rest of the night.

Also, Saturday night we went to the first Presidency Christmas devotional. The Prophet´s speech was way different than I have ever seen him. He told everyone to basically forget about the presents and remember the reason of Christmas. So, I hope you guys do something to try to remember the real meaning of christmas. Maybe you could watch the church´s christmas nativity movie or read the scriptures or somethin.

but thats all I have for this week, I am sad that Elder Oaks moved, but I am happy that Christian made it home safe and that Lowell is still doing well. I want him to play at my homecoming!

I love you all and I will talk to you SUNDAY!!

Feliz Natal!!!

Sorry about last week, but I was in Balneário Camboriú again. Its really cool there. The pics are of last week. And there is one when I got interviewed on the radio. But I am able to use SKYPE!! But, unfortunately, President said that we cannot go over 40 minutes. Soooo thats gonna be hard to follow haha but we´ll see how it goes. I am gonna have to work it all out this week, I will let you know next week. But I wanted to send everyone presents but I didn´t have any money, so, sorry... I will try for everone´s birthday. I already got Mom´s present down!

This week was tough. I did contacts all day everyday. It was rainy most of the week. But, we did have 10 investigators at church this week!! Our hard work paid off!! But I have been going out with an Elder who is going home on Wednesday named Elder Bingham from Syracuse. He is a good missionary. We found a LOT of cool people that have accepted baptism.. In particular we found a little family of 3 that went to church this week. They are so cool, and I can just tell that they are prepared. I walked in their house and it was neat and organized and they didn´t have any catholic pictures on their walls (like everyone else has) and they listened and didn´t debate it was great. They loved the first lesson and the wife cried. I think they are pretty good to go already!!

We had a training for the leaders on Tuesday with the PRez. He is sooo hilarious. He is just a little short tiny guy that is so full of energy and has the most hilarious accent.. But, he said that I will have to wear my missionary clothes if you come to pick me up so thats kind of a bummer. But our english class is gettin a little bit better each time. I talked about it on the radio and went downtown and asked if a newspaper could put it in an ad and they turned out interviewing us, so I will have to buy the paper when it comes out! I like to work in a different way, being creative. Its a lot more fun than just knocking doors. But, unforunately, it has to be done too.

But I don´t know if I have ever told you about CHURASSCO, but it is like a brazilian BBQ. It is SOO good though, and everyone does it here. So we eat pure meat all day. I still weigh the same, but I have lost my muscle, so I weigh about 170 now. I run every morning though, so I think that I will be in pretty good shape when I get home. How is everyone doing?? But it really is so hot. IT is getting worst too. Some days there is no need to dry off from the shower cuz if you do you are instantly soaked in humidity and sweat again. But transfers are here, I will be staying in Itajaí with the same comp, elder Checketts. I like him a lot, he is a great guy. All of my friends are getting home!! Its so weird! They all send me emails.

Well, sorry I didn´t have anything really cool to say, this week was rough and I got home every night so tired I didnt even write in my journal. But I am still extremely happy, I learn everyday, and I love it here. I love missionary work, ALOT, I just wish I could have more energy during the day. Its exhausting! But I hope everyone is doing well, if not, I hope it improves soon! I love you all!! SEE you in 2 weeks!

That was the last thanksgiving I will spend away from home!!

I am going to ask if I can watch a ski documentary for Christmas (we can watch PG films) So MIKE, you gotta pick the best one and Mom get ready to buy it cuz i am gonna ask prez this week. (I will talk about college too)

But, Tuesday it rained like mad. It is SOO hot and when it rains its better because at least I dont get sunburned. We started english class here in Itajaí but it was a complete failure the first time. Not one person came!! Haha, thats ok, it´ll get better. Good news though, my new matress came!! I sleep a lot better now. With my 75 dollar pillow too its a pretty good sleep. But, We also got a new clothes thingy (armwa:????) and a dresser. So our house it really clean and neat now!! But, unfortunately, an elder who lives in filth becaeuse he doesnt care is living in my house now, and his equally filthy comp. It sucks. But its fun to live in 4. There is no place to dry our clothes though!! I am hanging up wires everywhere its really funny!

So the bishop here is nuts. He works for the swat team in brazil and almost dies every week. He ``subdued```me the other day. He did some thing with my hand and it hurt so bad I had to go to the floor. It really hurt so bad. He is a good guy though. Unfortunately, our baptism fell through. She said she wanted to pray more and all the stuff. But, I am learning how to bake bread. Its kinda hard, and I am sure it is different here. But I also like to cook stroganaugh. Its really easy and good too! But on wednesday I started to walk with my umbrella open. It is just so unbearably hot I couldn´t stand the sun on my face. People give me odd looks but I don´t care, the sun is deadly. But it rains a lot so that is good.

Thursday we did contacts all day. We found a family of 8 and began to teach them. They are cool. OOO and we went to the radio station to try to schedule an interview to talk about the english class and we GOT a full 45 minute interview!! I will try to get a recording of it, but they are gonna ask all kinds of questions about the mormons.. Its gonna be so cool! I hope a lot of people listen because we are gonna maybe get a lot of people to come to the english classes!! That will happen TOMORROW.

Friday, we also did contacts. It was a tough day. I don´t really remember haha.

Saturday was also not a great day. We at least taught a couple lessons though. I made a mango cinnamon smoothie cuz I wanted to invent a new flavor but it was terrible and I am still sick from taking just a sip. Really, it made me sick. I hate mangos now. But we taught that one family of 8 and the spirit was really strong but only 1 of 8 accepted baptism. But, the other 7 will think about it and visit church. So, we´ll see.

Sunday, we had lunch at a lady´s house from bahia. I love Bahianos. But the rest of the day was tough too, this week was just full of fallen appointments. BUT,

today was AWESOME!! I am in Balneário Camboriú right now, and I did a thing called the bondinho. Its lke a ski lift. But it goes up and over an island and you can see the whole city and the beaches! This is a city that we HAVE to come visit! It is in the middle of the jungle. I will send pics nxt week, I forgot my chord for the camera.

Thats all for this week, I love you all!! TALK to you in a few weeks!!

November 21, 2011

I took good notes this week, so I will tell you what I did in chronological order.
Tuesday: There was a brand new chapel that was dedicated in the area next to mine in downtown Itajaí, so we went there to invite people to go inside to be about to quench their curiosity. It took 8 months to build, and it is right downtown so a lot of people passed by it. We had a little bit of success, it was a good day. The neighborhoods there are so rich!! It would be a cool place to live. The chapel is a monster though. It is really pretty. We just had stake conference there and it was PACKED!! President fernandes gave a talk and everyone compared him to a pastor because he is just so intense with his screaming and hand movements. The temple president of Curitiba gave a talk too, it was awesome.
On Wednesday, I went to an EVER COOLER city called Balneário Camboriú. It is such a unique city, withy really pretty beaches and it even has a big christ statue like the one in Rio but this one is holding a big spot light that shines on the city at night hahah. Wednesday night I opened my box, set up my christmas tree, and put all the presents underneath. It looks really good! I´ll have to send a picture. Also, on Wednesday, an elder had to go to a town way far away to get eye surgery so I was with his companion, who was my old campanion, elder Conceição. He seems a lot happier now, I guess he just didn´t like me or somethin!! But also, on Wednesday, I had been sleeping without a pillow for 6 weeks, so I went to a way fancy store and bought a 75 real pillow with nasa foam inside. it is pretty good, but was extremely expensive... But anyways, Wednesday also was really rainy, which was TERRIBLE because it made it way humid but the heat didn´t leave... The rain almost burns when it hits your skin cuz its so hot outside.
Thursday I didn´t note anything. I think I just did contacts all day in the sun.
Friday was interviews. I had to make sure everything went down smoothly and that everyone had lunch. We had 6 missionaries at one house in my area!! The family consists of 6 people and all of them weigh at least 250.. I dunno if I told you about them or not. They are hilarious but really really, really fat. It was good to converse with president, I like to talk to him. I respect him a lot. I visited one of my future baptisms on Friday night and we had a really good, spiritual lesson with em.
Saturday, President visited my house!! He said it was really good but the gas tank expired 7 YEARS ago, so I have to buy a new one. And he said I have to buy new lightbulbs. But, he like the house and on the mission I have discovered that I am a bit of a clean freak so luckily it was really clean when he came. Later on that day I found a really rich neighborhood in my area (THE ONLY ONE) and it only has like 20 houses, so we knocked them all, with little success.
Sunday, like I said, was stake conference. We got a ride from the bishop. He is a member of the brazilian swat team and has so many crazy stories!! We are gonna go look at all his cool guns one of these p days.. But stake conference was great. What made it better was that we had our future baptisms attend!! Its always so gratifying to see investigators at church. But, later that night we taught a really cool family and it was one of the best lessons I have ever had the spirit was so strong! They accepted to be baptized on the spot!! And it isn´t one of those, ``yea... I´ll be baptized, maybe`` it was like ``YES.`` So that was cool.
Today I went into a HUGE catholic church. I also ate at subway. Mom, I didnt get the packages yet. Just that one.
Thats all for this week, LOVE YOU ALL!!
Love Alex
